Thinking in Images: The Illustrations Behind Avansa’s Annual Plan
Some projects take time. Not because they move slowly, but because they deserve time. That was certainly true for the series of illustrations created to bring to life the four strategic goals of Avansa Halle-Vilvoorde. Avansa Halle-Vilvoorde is one of twelve regional social and cultural organizations in Flanders and Brussels. Together, they work towards a sustainable, inclusive, solidary, and democratic society. It’s an ambitious mission — and rightly so. The challenge was to make these broad ideals not only understandable in words, but also visually clear and engaging. From Thinking to Drawing What began as a pile of notes, concepts, and diagrams gradually evolved into a visual story. How do you translate abstract themes like knowledge and skills, diversity as a strength, social cohesion, and active participation into images that speak, connect, and stay with you? The process unfolded through sketches, pencil strokes, and conversations. At times, the drawing seemed to require as much

Illustrating Lifesaving Steps: From Recovery Position to CPR with Securex
In a medical emergency, clear thinking and calm action can make all the difference. Whether someone is unconscious but still breathing, or their heart has stopped, knowing what to do — and being able to picture each step — can save a life. That’s why Securex commissioned a series of instructional illustrations that guide viewers through the essential stages of PLS (Recovery Position) and RCP (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, or CPR). The goal of the series is simple yet vital: to make lifesaving first-aid procedures accessible, memorable, and visually clear. The illustrations show the progression of actions anyone can take in an emergency: Assess the situation – Check for responsiveness and ensure safety. Call for help – Alert emergency services and gather support. PLS (Recovery Position) – If the person is unconscious but breathing, gently place them in a stable side position to keep their airway clear. RCP (CPR) – If there are no signs of breathing or circulation, begin chest compress

Animated Illustrations for Marlinks
Continuous subsea cable health monitoring for offshore turbines – Marlinks.com For Marlinks I had the pleasure of creating a series of animated illustrations that bring their innovative services to life. The assignment focused on continuous subsea cable health monitoring for offshore wind turbines – a vital part of ensuring efficiency and reliability at sea. The visuals include: * An offshore turbine turning steadily in the waves * An offshore substation connecting energy to the grid * A monitoring screen showing real-time graphs and warnings of subsea cable health To develop these assets, I started with analog pencil sketches for concepts and storytelling, and then moved into Adobe Illustrator for clean vector design. The animations were crafted in After Effects, keeping them in harmony with the Marlinks brand guide. This project was not only a design challenge but also an opportunity to learn more about the complex world of subsea monitoring and how visual storytelling can help commu

Mycelia Academy
I am working on a video-course about hygiene in the industrial mushroom production. Mycelia is one of Belgium's leader's in biotech and mushroom production. The team has been amazing and the work very interesting. I have learned a lot from both the content (What is a micro-organism?) and the process (new tips and tricks in Premiere and After Effects). Over the last 5 months I have been recording, editing, animating, illustrating, designing, storyboarding, directing, mixing and recording sound and having lots of good times with the Mycelia -crew AKA the Mushroom people. The final result will consist out of 4 modules and about 40 videocourses in total. The underlying message: learn from the (expensive) mistakes the pro's at Mycelia made in the past, by both preventing and remediating big and small disasters (infections). The challenge? Translating complicated and dry information in a clear and fun way for both the biotech professionnal and the enthousisastic mushroom business amateur, an

Three big reasons to avoid the use of generative AI
Like many other technologies in our lives, generative AI quickly became a commodity. Generative AI has known an exponential, explosive growth since 2020. Today generative AI got integrated into almost every bit of software, and is all over our social media and websites. In my opinion there are 3 big reasons to stay away from generative AI as much as you can. The reasons are prety straightforward and obvious to me as an illustrator, brand designer, artist and overall creative person. I hope they become as obvious to you whatever your profession or position might be. 1. Generative AI makes you lazy and dependent AI Enthousiasts start to think like drug addicts. Get your kicks, fast and cheap. In my line of work, visual thinking and graphic storytelling, I would never let go of my quadrant of tangible tools and tangible materials: the pencil, the brain, the eye and the the canvas. Then, there is the value of the struggle and experience when looking for answers and solutions, which is in m

Workation good times
I recently took part in an amazing adventure organized by The Viomatico. A workation, aka business retreat, is not a holiday; it’s a strategic business activity that combines work and professional development in a new environment. The primary focus is on enhancing productivity, fostering creativity, and investing in skills or strategic planning that directly benefits the business. In my case the illustration and graphic design business. I left with low expectations and came home with renewed mental and physical energy, actionable strategies, at least 13 new friends, tons of connections and a whole bunch of ideas, solutions and inspiration to process later on. The ingredients: A group of enterpreneurs or freelancers from different places on the planet and from different industries. In my case there were people working in UX, tourism, fitness, healthcare, event management, copywriting, coaching, IT, interior design and rocket science. A magical location with beautiful accomodation, and w
